Today, we were up
early for a "Stones and Bones" tour featuring Stonehenge
We began the day in Avebury, which is the largest stone site in
the country. It sits in the middle of a group of pastures near a
small village. Many of the stones are missing because over
the centuries locals busted them and used them to build other
structures, though some are buried (an attempt to appease the
church when paganism went out of favor).. |

Next was Old Sarum
Castle, which was once an Iron Age Hillfort. William the
Conqueror visited and something important happened....I think I
was sneaking a jelly roll while Graham, our guide, told us, so I
don't remember. Anyway, it was impressive. The old
fort was used to build the Cathedral in Salisbury. It had a
beautiful view of the surrounding countryside, and the new
cathedral. |
