TRAVEL DIARY: AVEBURY/SARUM/STONEHENGE/SALISBURY
TUESDAY

Today, we were up early for a "Stones and Bones" tour featuring Stonehenge
We began the day in Avebury, which is the largest stone site in the country. It sits in the middle of a group of pastures near a small village.  Many of the stones are missing because over the centuries locals busted them and used them to build other structures, though some are buried (an attempt to appease the church when paganism went out of favor)..

Next was Old Sarum Castle, which was once an Iron Age Hillfort.  William the Conqueror visited and something important happened....I think I was sneaking a jelly roll while Graham, our guide, told us, so I don't remember.  Anyway, it was impressive.  The old fort was used to build the Cathedral in Salisbury. It had a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside, and the new cathedral.

Next it was on to Stonehenge, which was stunning....you sort of catch your breath when you come upon it.  It surprises you because it's only 30 feet or so from the highway. We couldn't go into the circle, which was a bummer. These stones are huge!

How cold was it at Stonehenge?

Lunch was in a town nearby....this pub was actually across the street.  It never occurred to me to take a picture of the pub we ate in.

Then to Salisbury Cathedral, which was striking. It was built in the early Gothic style beginning around 1220..

It was so big I couldn't really get a good picture...below, Mary in the cathedral; me outside the cathedral..

I lit a candle for Dad's treatments to go well, and another for Gina's delivery to go well.

I also requested a special prayer for both of them in the prayer book

We toured the Charter House and viewed one of only 4 surviving copies of the Magna Carta..

Tomorrow it's the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery.  Then Thursday, it's PARIS!

love, hugs, and kisses,

Carolyn
