TRAVEL DIARY: LONDON AND THE VICTORIA & ALBERT MUSEUM

We (Mary and I) arrived in London Friday night after a long, long flight. I have discovered I can no longer sleep sitting up----an enormous disappointment on an 8 hour flight. We were smart enough to hire a car to pick us up at Heathrow, since we were arriving after 11pm. Our driver was quite funny, but knew very little about the section of town we are staying in....so we got a nice tour (several, in fact) of the neighborhood before he finally found our hotel. Our hotel room reflects the city itself.....everything is so small. I feel a little like a giant lumbering around the room and the city. The museums are huge, the streets narrow, and the elevators are tiny. But there is nothing tinier than our bathroom in the hotel. I have made the life altering discovery that I can brush my teeth over the sink, take a shower, and use the toilet without moving. This bathroom makes a airplane bathroom look large!  I have to move Mary's bed to get the door open completely!

Mary multi-tasks in the bathroom..

Saturday was spent in the Victoria and Albert Museum, which feels a little like sorting through a vast attic of an old, great uncle you didn't know you had. Dust everywhere, poorly lit, with many surprises. It felt a little like discovering hidden treasures.

A detail of a chair Mary wanted me to take......I don't know why.

It does look a little like an attic or a basement, doesn't it? This wasn't part of the exhibit, though.

However, our favorite item in the Victoria and Albert Museum was the "way out" fudge marble pound cake in the cafe.  We ate the picture, too.
